Nell’s up for Monster Challenge

IF you are a runner who is attracted to the idea of doing a duathlon, the First Monster Challenge at the end of this summer could be an ideal introductory event for you.

A duathlon involves running and cycling and the First Monster Challenge, which takes place on September 2 on the banks of Loch Ness in Scotland, sees teams of four covering distances of 20km on the bike and 10km on foot – with 120km of total distance covered by each team.

To add to the occasion, celebrity runner Nell McAndrew will be one of the estimated 1000 competitors. Who knows, you may even spot Nessie too.

“The First Monster Challenge is a very exciting event, although I expect it to be extremely tough,” said McAndrew, an experienced marathoner with a PB of 3:10:51. “My training for this has already started – I am used to running, the cycling is something I am a little nervous of. It should be a great day – and I hope that we can raise a significant amount of cash for Save the Children.”

The organisers, FirstGroup, also plan to roll out the ‘First Mini Monster Challenge’ from 2008. A series of events which will take place throughout the UK, the ‘First Mini Monster Challenge’ is based on the original concept but targeted more at people who perhaps aren’t up to the 10km run and a 20km cycle.
