Improve mobility with power yoga

ATHLETES with poor flexibility or constant injury problems might find an answer to their problems by starting some serious mobility training. To do this, there is no better way than to try yoga.

In short, yoga is a series of postures and breathing exercises practised to achieve control of the body and mind. Whatever your event, practising yoga once or twice a week, or even adding a short, daily session into your life, will not do your performance any harm.

For active athletes who take part in extreme endurance races such as the marathon, or events that need considerable strength and power such as shot, discus, hammer and javelin, the pursuit of yoga might seem too slow and associated with clichéd visions of old people stretching their bodies in dusty church halls.
If you carry such perceptions, though, AW Basics recommends you get a copy of Power Yoga Total Body – a 60-minute DVD that sees instructor Rodney Yee demonstrating a full-
body work out.

In addition to athletes who have poor flexibility, practising yoga is also useful for athletes entering the veteran age groups who wish to continue displaying good mobility as they grow older.
